Clarice's face showed how sad she was getting just through what Brent was telling her. She always did that... when some body was telling her a story that was sad, she had a knack of feeling others emotions through what they were telling her.
"I'm sorry, Brent. That must be horrible. Not knowing you were a wizard until you got your letter at 11. Then getting all excited because you were going off somewhere to learn magic. Just to be disappointed by all the teasing you got for who your parents were."
Clarice couldn't even begin to understand what Brent had to go through. She grew up hearing stories about Hogwarts, and being a witch or wizard. She grew up knowing everything about the wizarding world. So it wasn't a surprise when she got her letter and went off to Hogwarts. She wasn't teased, or looked down on.
Brent was. Brent didn't have a good experience with going to Hogwarts. Muggleborns were always looked down on. Clarice didn't like the thought of that. But it didn't stop it from being true.

Clarice's face stayed in the frown that Brent's word had made. She hated when people were sad. She supposed it was the Gryffindor trait in her. Always wanting to do something to help people. Make them feel better. Even though she knew that that didn't always happen.
"I'm sorry, Brent. I imagine that it's just as it's hard for the parents to adapt to a magical kid as much as it is for a kid to adapt in a magical word. Some wouldn't take it as well as others." Clarice put her hand on Brent's shoulder in a kind gesture. She didn't really know what else to do. But it was worth a shot. Sometimes people liked those kinds of gestures. Some didn't.
Clarice didn't know what it was like to not be close to her parents. She used to be able to tell her parents anything. They are still semi close now. But not as close as when she was younger. It would be horrible not talking to her parents for several years.

Clarice regretted reaching out to him to moment it happened. He backed away and looked like he was about to explode. She really didn't know what to do. She wanted to make him feel better, as that was the type of person she was, but she didn't think that she could. Didn't think it was possible.
Clarice sighed heavily when he told her she had to go. Not even wanting to think about the fact that it was probably her fault for his hostility. She hated making people uncomfortable or mad or sad. But it seemed like she had done all three with Brent. So much for making a good impression.
She wanted to laugh at his completely fake smile he gave her before he walked back up to the castle. But forced herself not to. It was a kind gesture. One that Clarice probably didn't deserve. But she was going to take it.
"Bye, Brent!" Clarice yelled after his retreating figure in a hope that he would hear it.
Shaking her head, clearly confused by what exactly just happened she slowly made her way back up to the castle.
