a little brother! And, no, it doesn't mean anything to me! ...I don't believe you." Brent turned to face Tommy a nodded. "See. He's happy living in that care home thingy."[/ul]

Chase couldn't believe Brent was acting like this. Here was a poor little eleven year old who had lived in a foster care home for his entire life. This little kid, who was Brent's brother, probably wasn't very happy there. No matter how much he said he didn't mind it. This wasn't the Brent Chase knew and loved. He figured it was just because Brent was hurt and confused right now.
"He's not some random kid anymore. You know that." Chase just wanted Brent to realize that each other was the only family they both had left. They had to stick together. Chase was sure Brent was just scared. Thinking that he didn't know how to raise a kid. It wasn't like Chase wouldn't help him.
"Do you honestly think he's happy there, Brent? Would you be happy in a home where you had no family. No one to love you. Especially when you had a big brother that has a house, a job, and is capable of raising him."

he wasn't some random kid anymore; of course he knew that. He just didn't want to know that. Why couldn't Tommy just continue being random? Why did he have to be Brent's brother? His glare hardened. Chase was trying to change his mind, he clearly wanted Brent to take in this kid. Brent definitely wasn't going to stop putting up a fight. "Yeah, he's surrounded by kids to play with and stuff!" he shouted, "His big brother may have a house and a job but he's certainly not capable of raising him! And what's Maryn gonna think? She doesn't even know about any of this!" Brent went silent, not wanting to bring Maryn into this conversation though he knew that she'd be important to this whole situation. He knew she'd probably try and get him to take in Tommy too... "You are happy there... aren't you?" Brent asked a little desperately, staring at Tommy.[/ul]

"You are capable of raising him, Brent. So don't try to tell me otherwise. I know you, and therefore know you are." Chase knew that Brent was afraid to raise Tommy, but honestly, the only time he would truly have him is in the summer. Other than that, they both would be at Hogwarts. And it wasn't like Chase wouldn't help him out. He would as much as Brent needed.
Chase felt horrible when the kid said he hated it there. He figured it was like that. After all, most kids felt that way if they stayed in a care-home. Especially a wizard. Wizards didn't fit in anywhere truly, besides in the wizarding world.
"Brent. You can't let your little brother go back to that home. You can't let him go to some place with people that hate him. You have to take him in Brent."
Chase knew that Brent was afraid. That he didn't want to live with him because he didn't know how to raise a kid, but that he also would be reminded of his parents everytime he saw him. But he had to do the right thing here.
Chase walked over to Brent, which wasn't far, and hugged him again. Tight, to make sure that Brent knew Chase was there. That Chase would never leave. That he was always there for him.
He whispered in his ear, "I know it'll be hard, but it's the right thing to do."

Chase wanted to smile when Brent told him not to apologize, but held it back. Chase knew that deep down, Brent knew the right thing to do. Most of the time Brent always knew the right thing to do, whether he did it was a different story.
"You are, Brent. And I'll be there to help you." Chase meant it. He really did. Sure, Chase didn't exactly know how to raise a kid himself, but together they'd be able to figure it out.
"You're just having some rough spots. Everything will work out in the end, Boo. I promise. Eventually your life will get back on track." Chase didn't want to let Brent go. He could feel his pain and he hated when Brent was in pain. He wished he could take the pain for him. That that was even possible. But it wasn't, and he couldn't.
Chase heard Tommy say it was his fault, but it wasn't. He would have told him that too, but Chase thought that his words wouldn't make a difference. He needed to hear it from Brent. Wanting to laugh at Tommy's second comment, Chase bit his lip. Still holding onto Brent, Chase replied to him. "Ya know. I always did think he had some girlish features." Chase wanted to lighten up the mood. His shins could handle another kick if it got Brent to relax a bit.

." he huffed. Stupid kid. It wasn't his fault and Brent didn't like him thinking that. "You.. You will?" Brent asked, staring at Chase. Was he really going to help? Because Brent needed all the help he could get. "Not that I'll need your help 'cause I dunno if I'm actually gonna look after him anyway." he added. Brent sighed, "Yeah. Whatever. I guess so." Who knew? Maybe things would get better? Eventually. Possibly. Probably not anytime soon though, Brent thought, he had dozens of messes to clean up first. Glaring, Brent kicked Chase's shin as hard as he could. "I do not have girlish features!" he mumbled sulkily. Tommy hadn't been the first person to mention Brent's likeness to his mother, he'd gotten it a lot when he was younger. "Thanks guys, thanks a bunch."[/ul]

"Of course I'll help, Brent. Just... Just think about how you would feel in that place. Would you want to live there?" Chase knew Brent wouldn't. Who in their right mind would. To be somewhere and live with people that hated you would be the worst feeling in the world.
"No guessing. Be positive." Chase smiled at Brent. Things would start to look better. He was sure of it.
Chase took the kick silently. Knowing he deserved it. He didn't even get a laugh out of Brent. But he did get one out of Tommy. Which he supposed was worth it in the end. Chase wanted to laugh when Tommy said he had detention. Taking after his older brother in the detention department, obviously.
"Goodbye, Tommy. See you around the castle." Normally Chase would say in class, but as he was a first year, he didn't have Care of Magical Creatures class.
Waiting until Tommy left, Chase looked back at Brent.
"You know I love you, Boo-Boo. I'm here for you. No matter what."

about it. He was happy with saying that. He didn't have to make any promises about actually taking Tommy in. He was just going to think about it, that was all. "I'm guessing. And there is no way on earth I'm gonna get my hopes up that everything will get sorted out 'cause then, chances are, it won't." Brent mumbled. It always happened, Brent had learnt to never set his hopes too high. He'd never been a particularly lucky person. Brent sighed again and couldn't help but smile a little. "Love you more." he whispered, "I dunno what I'd do without you, Chay-Chay." [/ul]

"Must be something in the McKinney genes. Detention and all. I'm sure if you took him in, though. You could teach him the opposite what you did." Chase winked at Brent. Half joking, half being serious.
"Thinking about it is all I ask. Most of the time you do the right thing when you think." That was really the truth. Brent always acted rash, and normally the wrong thing, but when he thought about things, he did the right thing. Most of the time...
"Hmm. You'd definitely be bored. And you'd have to look for a different drummer. And you wouldn't have anyone to kick. Well. I suppose you'd just kick Reid or Hunter." Chase joked with Brent. Honestly, Chase didn't know what he would do without Brent either. They weren't just best friends, they were more than that. Chase couldn't live without Brent in his life.

Chase laughed as Brent answered Chase's comment about teaching him the opposite. Chase kind of doubted any McKinney would actually be able to go through school without detentions every other week. It was just something in their genes. "Okay, so don't teach him the opposite, just don't teach him what you did." Chase laughed again.
"Yes, well. That's because you rarely think, Boo-Boo. You just act." Chase knew it was true, Brent didn't like thinking. Anyone that knew him knew that. Chase had, over the years, learned how to successfully not think as well. Only because if he didn't, he would probably not be Brent's friend. Chase was completely opposite what he is now when he arrived at Hogwarts. But he'll never regret meeting Brent. He changed his life around. In a good way.
"Oww!" Chase yelled as he laughed. Brent really should stop kicking his shins, but Chase knew he was joking. Or at least he hoped.
