Chase had been out in the forest, petting and feeding the thestrals. He always went to the thestrals when he needed time to think and stuff like that. And he really needed to think about things. His fight with Brent, if you could even call it a fight.
Looking up from the thestrals, he noticed Brent walking through the forest, it was extremely weird for Brent to be in the forest at all. Especially when he seemed to be dragging a first year along with him. It was a really off sight to be seeing. Brent and a first year... in the forbidden forest. Wasn't the forest off limits to students anyways? Why would Brent be dragging a student in it.
"Brent? What's going on? What's with the first year? Why are you in the forest?" Confusion flushed over Chase as the questions started pouring out of his mouth. This was Pretty. Odd.

Chase was still extremely confused. Neither of the two said anything. At first Chase thought that the kid had done something to make Brent angry, and he was taking him to Chase to give the punishment. Like work in the forest or something. But that could have waited. It wouldn't be that bad that he would take him there right away.
Hearing Brent sigh... he knew there was something wrong. He could just tell. He wasn't Brent's best friend for nothing. So he wasn't surprised when Chase came over to him, wrapping his arms around Chase in a hug, and started to cry. He hated seeing Brent upset, especially when he really had no idea why he was upset in the first place.
"Brent, what's wrong? What happened? Talk to me." Chase hugged him back, stroking his hand up and down on his back in a loving gesture. Hoping that it would show Brent he was there for him. No matter what. Chase hoped this time would be different. That Brent would actually talk to him. As Brent had sought out Chase, he saw that as a good sign it would be.

could have a best friend. The person he was closest to was Lucy but she couldn't be his best friend because a)she was female and b)she was an adult. Tommy was still grateful to be able to talk with her when he needed to. She seemed to be the only person who would listen.[/ul]

if he'd just been there with him. "That's not all though..." Brent went on, his voice shaking, "I have a brother, Chase, a little brother. And I didn't even know! They didn't even tell me!" Brent knew he was partly his fault he'd never been told until now. But only partly...[/ul]

Chase kind of blocked out the little kid as he tried to comfort Brent. He didn't think it was anything that extreme when Brent told him what was wrong. He couldn't believe it. Brent had gone through so much already in the past few weeks alone. Yet there was just more and more that kept happening. Chase didn't even know if he could fix it anymore.
"Brent. I am so sorry. But it's not your fault. Just because you left them... it doesn't mean anything. It was just the way their lives happened. You couldn't have stopped it. Please, don't think it's your fault. It's no ones fault." Chase continued to hug him, knowing that he shouldn't let go right now. Not when Brent needed him. He needed someone to just hold him. To be there for him. Brent was squeezing him really hard, and it kind of hurt Chase, but he didn't care. Brent could squeeze him as hard as he needed to.
Chase's eyes opened extremely wide at the second part. How could that be possible. Wouldn't his parents tell them... at least send him a letter no matter how long ago they stopped talking. Chase's eyes landed on the kid, Tommy he thought his name was but didn't know for sure because he didn't have him in a class. He was only a first year. But he had heard his name before, after all he was in his own house.
"Wait... do you mean. Does that make.... Is he your little brother?"

All this pain his brother was feeling, it was all because of Tommy. Because he had to go and give Brent that letter. And Tommy was starting to deeply regret his decision now. Tommy walked closer to Brent and Professor Jackson, feeling a little nervous. All he heard Brent say was 'brother'. He'd told Professor Jackson... Was that a good idea though? What would he think? He heard his head of house's question and answered immediatly, finally finding the courage to speak again. "Yeah... I'm his little brother. I've known for years, I got this letter from our dad and..." Tommy trailed off, knowing that Brent probably wasn't comfortable hearing about Clayton right now.[/ul]

Finally the little kid spoke. He had confirmed what Chase had basically figured out. Tommy was Brent's little brother. He had been the one that had told Brent everything that was wrong. It was his fault Brent knew. Chase felt anger toward him for a second, for making Brent feel bad. But after realizing that he was more than likely going through the same thing the anger evaporated. He couldn't be mad at him.
"Okay. I won't say sorry, Boo. But I can't just let you think it's your fault they died. It wasn't. You did what you had to do when you left them. Your dad would have moved back to Nevada anyways. You have your own life now."
"Don't give up, Brent. You have so much to live for still. It's just a rough patch in your life. Soon everything will be straightened out. Everything will be fine soon." Chase said it, but even he didn't know if it were true. He just wanted Brent to feel better. No matter what lies he had to say.
Sometimes Chase wondered how his brain worked, but he randomly had a thought. "Wait. So if they're both. You know. Then who have you been living with, Tommy?" Chase was afraid to hear it. He had a strange feeling he lived in a foster home, and that couldn't be good for Tommy.

it's my fault, I know it is. If I'd just grown up and realised what a fucking idiot I was being... He would've stayed with me, I wouldn't let him go." Brent whispered, tears of hurt and frustration rolling down his cheeks. Brent didn't no if he should believe Chase or not and he knew that Chase could easily just be lying to him to back him feel better, he knew he'd surely do the same for Chase. That's waht best friends did; they lied to each other to make each other feel better. "You don't really think that, do you? Because if you do then you really are an idiot... All of this, there can't be any positive outcomes in this all. It's like every mistake I've ever made is coming back to bite me..." Although Brent couldn't see him, Brent could hear in Tommy's voice that he didn't enjoy living in that care home. He wouldn't enjoy living with Brent either. He couldn't at the moment, not while things were so complicated anyway. An eleven year old in a house often filled with four twenty-something year olds that got drunk and swore and generally were shitty role models was not a good idea at all. And Brent in charge of a kid? He couldn't even look after a fucking toad properly.[/ul]

Chase's thoughts were confirmed by Tommy. He was living in a care home. Without any family because his parents were dead. That wasn't right. Brent could take him in... he was his last family member alive. Surely Brent wouldn't leave Tommy is a care home after he knew about him being his brother.
"Brent. You can't let him live in a care home. He's your family." Chase said it slowly. Trying to make sure he wouldn't say something that either set Brent off crying more or angry. Which could be worse.
"Brent. You wouldn't have been able to control your father!" Chase couldn't let Brent think it was his fault. It wasn't. None of this was Brent's fault.
"I might not think exactly that..." Chase admitted, but continued. "But there are positives. To everything. Think of it Brent. You might have lost your parents, but you gained a little brother! That has to mean something to you. He's family. He's your family. It's not going to be as bad as you think." Chase meant that. Brent got a new family in a way. Even when his old one is gone now. There was a positive to the Maryn situation too, but not one that Chase could say in front of Tommy.
